TMNT: Tibetan Mandala for a New Theology                                                             March 2017

Picture
Acrylic on Canvas 30"x30"

One of the most influential and important mythologies from my childhood set into the style of a classic mandala, this one based on the Buddha Amitayus from 19th century Tibet:
Picture
At center, Kraang meditates within the Dimension X portal, awakened and aware of himself not as his android body, nor the brain within, but the idea of self within the brain. The Technodrome surrounds, with the minor deities of Shredder, Baxter Stockman, Bebop, Rocksteady, and the Foot Clan performing mudras with their traditional ritual weapons. The Sanskrit incantation that boxes this in is a rough translation of the theme song from the 1987 cartoon series reminding the student of the roles of the Four Brothers: Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines, Raphael is cool, but rude, Michelangelo is a party dude. These brothers reside in the above sewer level, while on the street level, Casey Jones, April O'neil and Splinter perform their own mudras.
